ADOPT-A-BASIC-SCHOOL PROGRAM
This program has been the cornerstone of the work of PACE since its inception. Through financial contributions and material help, the Adopt-A-Basic-School program provides assistance to Jamaican Basic schools in response to needs identified by local community and educational committees.
How does the program work?
Can you spare a dollar a day each year? To many rural communities in Jamaica, this minimum Canadian $365 annually would be a tremendous boost to their efforts to provide pre-school education to their children 3 to 6 years of age. Your yearly commitment would give generations of youngsters the positive start they need. All funds are submitted directly to the school and charitable donation receipts are provided to sponsors by PACE.
You may participate as a joint-sponsor(s) or do it alone. Select the parish or location of your basic school or consult with PACE. to identify one that is most needy. Adopted schools are encouraged to write to their sponsors and let them know how the funds are being used so you can see the difference you have made.
What is a Basic School?
A basic school is a pre-school for children under six years of age – a community school, requested and supported by members of the area in which it is located. Thirty years ago these schools existed as private enterprise, more often than not started by an individual in the area to provide a service to the children in the community. Since then, the Government started to supervise and subsidize schools that meet some minimum required criteria, but parents are expected to contribute to school fees and school lunches. Many of these schools are held in churches and church-owned buildings, or on privately-owned land.
